setting character encoding via .htaccess?

Hello keyboard wizzard,
i just read an article on this site about .htaccess. I am looking for a way to change the character encoding for my site. The (Apache)server uses charset=iso-8859-1 . But i would like utf-8 much better... The hosting company told my i could change it through a .htaccess directive. I did not find this in the tutorial though. Anyone an idea?
