span tag and padding

Can I apply padding to the bottom of a span element. I tried the below and no work.

span.spanMatchText2{
text-decoration: underline;
font-weight: bold;
font-family: Arial, sans-serif;
font-size:8pt;
padding-bottom: 10px;

}

At this time it's totally unsubstantiated, but it seems like I heard once upon a time that you can specify display:block; and then style it as you would any div element. I might just be cracked out right now though. Has anyone else ever heard of this?
