make movieclip invisible not working

I have one layer called "themovieclip" with one frame. On this i put a movieclip which is also called "themovieclip" with a button in it.
below this movieclip layer i put the following actionscript

themovieclip._visible=false;

but when i play the swf the button shows. I thought it was supposed to be invisible. Please help.

never mind....solved ..... i had not named the instance
