Ubuntu 8.10, 'Intrepid Ibex'

Did anyone else see in the news about Ubuntu 8.10? ('Intrepid Ibex')

Here's the most important bit of the story:

Quote:
Without much fanfare, developers of Ubuntu Linux have delivered the latest version of the open source operating system that scores higher than Windows Vista in performance testing, does a better job than Windows in making wireless connectivity easy and, overall, leaves fewer reasons to stick with Windows than any other previous release of Linux.
Full story here:

I did the update 2 days ago.

This article is way too opinionated for me to trust it, in my view. I have both Ubuntu and Vista installed and use both regularly, and Vista is noticeably faster starting up after I removed the bloatware. There's too litte information in there for me. What exactly is wrong with Vista's Wireless console? It's pretty intuative (click then "Connect", surely?), and I didn't have to install a Broadcom driver to use it like I did on Ubuntu.

I do like this release of Ubuntu, though. It's the first one which "just worked" for me, apart from the ATI and Broadcom drivers, which were easy to install.

I don't like the update. The new theme is nothing grand. Fixed most of the bugs I found though.
edit://The reason you did not have to install a driver is b/c it most likely came pre-installed with your computer.

Thinking of switching to gentoo or freebsd

I take it you've never be a victim of the Vista wireless issue where you are using your connection and suddenly it drops out and then when says "there are wireless networks you can connect to!!!" and the first one in the list is the network you were just connected to that it normally connects to automatically.

Vista and Windows in general isn't as good when multiple processes are trying to use one hardware device such as the hard drive compared to Unix or Linux. But that is because resource sharing had to be better in Unix since it was multi user from the start.

No, never: my laptop came with SP1 and my RTM desktop is on Ethernet. I thought that was fixed in SP1, though...

@Millenia: That's a good point, and, regrettably, Windows will have that advantage in almost all PCs which aren't Macs. Yay for the underdog. But I'm happy that the driver was actually in the installation and I didn't have to go on the Internet to search from it, which could be...tricky.

Well said

I understand that Linux may not be as easy to use for some people. But that's just preference in my opinion. With Linux I seem to learn 2 things when learning 1. With Windows it's like "Do you want me to do this for you?", and you have no clue how to actually do it yourself. But with Linux, you learn manually, and because of this you have a better understanding of your computer. So you can fix other similar problems with common sense.
