I need help in timers

This is my first project in Java. I have used C before. I need to develop a game with a countdown timer in it. I am using netbeans as the IDE. I have no idea how to start. I need a label that will be placed somewhere in the window where the player can see the available time remaining for him to finish the level.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
