how to add the yp. in yp.yahoo.com

Sorry about the wierd subject line, frankly I don't even know what to call this method of nav but hopefully the subject gives some hint. Basically I have a client that wants to have a site set up within his domain that is accessed by adding: site.domain.com ... just like yp.yahoo.com is a site within the yahoo.com site. How is this different from the standard domain.com/site.html, and how do you pull it off? I realize this could be a bigger can of worms then I realize (or a smaller one for that matter!), but I guess the only stupid question is the one you don't ask, and since I don't see this method a lot nor have I ever read anything about it I'm a tad ignorant... ok I'm *totally* ignorant. Thanks for any help!

This is a sub-domain name (I think that's what they call it). You will have to ask your host to set this up for you. Some will set it up free of charge, others will charge you!

It can be done.

You then basically have two web sites on the same domain name.

www.domainname.com
www.sub.domainname.com

Many hosts use it for the e-mail programs, i.e www.mail.domainname.com

Or, if your host is using apache and has mod_rewrite enabled, you can create "fake" subdomains with htaccess

Or is using IIS with direct access to your DNS you can create your own instantly. My host supports this, it's great

Like for instance, http://odyssey.m5interactive.com took 5 seconds to setup, just fill in the subdomain and it is activated.

Also my host supports unlimited subdomains so I can add as many of those as I like for free. I like my host.

Or you could just use a plain old fashioned folder since search engines list pages not sites.

How'd you like to have a host that allows unlimited domains?
