Room for improvement in my Useful URL's site.

www.exitfegs.co.uk/Sources.html

I have got to the stage where I think that I could present the data in a easier to use fashion.

As usual, I find it difficult to make up my mind. If anyone who has time could toss some ideas my way, I would be grateful.

Anyway, it will give me something useful to do.

Why not put this in the site reviews forum as you really don't need help with the html or css? PM a moderator to move it. Users may read this so at the time of writing this post it was in the HTML/CSS forum.

I don't like the link font size resizing when you mouse over them. It disturbs the layout. I don't like the alternating colors. I don't like the "HELLO FANS" part especially in the multitude of colors you used. It looks like something a beginner would learn in a class. Get a logo of some kind.

Frank, you could put each heading into nav menu using just CSS and have each menu item, link to a page. Those pages could show all the links that are currently under each heading.

I agree with Aero_Space_Eng. As I said before, you'd be better to have the text size consistent whether on rollover and if you need it to be bigger, make both the default and the rollover states larger - just keep them the same. The page is quite a fluid design so it shouldn't break it if you go up a font size or two.

I think you ought to consider the general colour scheme. I am not sure that the background and the yellow and (especially), the links colours work easily. I struggle to read them and I know what most of them say, which should make it easier for me.

I use this site, to try to make the colours I use somewhat acceptable.

http://colorblender.com/

I know you have spent a long time on it and you have progressed well. (I hope that doesn't sound patronising). I learn things from you too. But I think if you were to learn a little of perl or php, you would have a much easier-to-manage site and have a lot more time to actually progress with it, rather than working on development of code.

It might slow you down for a week or two but, it will make it all quicker in the long run.

Thank you both. I agree with you both, but I have been using the site latterly, just to experiment. Now, I want to get it in order visually and usefully. I have to admit that I am not an orderly person. I find it difficult to organise things into their best arrangement.

The alternate colours and the multi-coloured Hello Fans was just in order to learn. But the expanding text, was for people like myself who have a difficulty reading. An alternative method of presentatiin will hopefully take care of this by putting less on the screen at a time. That is what prompted this posting. I do appreciate your help and guidance. I promise to take notice.

Kind regards,

Frank

Frank, I don't know which brower you use. I didn't recognise it from your screen shots in another thread but, I guess it might be FF.

No matter, use the browser to adjust your font-size so you can see how big you can set it before it goes all wonky. Or use the mousewheel with the CTRL button held down.

I have done a few mods to meet the suggestions. Just as a stop gap measure. Now I will get down to some serious thinking.

This version is now reasonable I think.

Any comments?

Now the hover is looking good

...Yet you might consider having a different background on your 3 columns which is far contrast from your page's background

...Also in my opinion, why not use target=_blank instead of the plain a href. For me, your links is useful, and I would love it to remain in my vision, than having it replaced by your links.

...just my two cents worth, anyways, this is yet a complete reference i've got to be thankful for

What would be the advantage in doing that? I have never used target before.

Thanks for your comments.

Advantage...it opens the link in the new window,..and let's your page remain..

I have difficulty in explaining things...i'm more of a problem solver than a theorist

My apologies

I don't like the cyan link hover as it clashes with the gray background. The parts that label what the section is should have a top margin or padding of some sort to distinguish it from the other links. It would also be good if you made like an alphabet of some kind and then linked them to each of the different sections. For example, the O section is a little further down on the page. Giving it an id like so
Code:
<h5 class="batch_headers" id="o">O - LOOK HERE FOR HELP?</h5>
then at the your alphabet links at the top you would use
Code:
<a href="#o">O</a>
Now users won't have to scroll much as your list increases in size and they will be able to find things easier. Repeat fro all of the letters you have. The alphabet list can be a simple horizontal list
Code:
<ul>
<li><a href="#a">A</a></li>
<li><a href="#b">B</a></li>
<li><a href="#c">C</a></li>
<li><a href="#d">D</a></li>
...
</ul>
Just make the li elements display:inline; and use text-align:center; on the ul.

I wouldn't use target. I hate it when a site opens up a new window, especially seeing as the innovation in tabbed browsing lately means that you should, by all means, only end up having one browser window. There are a couple of exceptions, like when the page behind bears significant information essential to the other page, but here it's just a list, no offense to Frank. New windows aren't needed: the user'll just press back.

I like this version a lot, but I agree the cyan hover needs to be changed to something else, as much as I hate removing my namesake =P

Thanks Aero and Cyan!,

I have altered the links hover.

I'll need to work on the rest.

FRank, I think you should space out the headers a bit more. Everything appears to be bunched up. Perhaps add {padding: 10px 0 10px 0;} to the headers.

I think the black border is too drak on your div.links. try a mid grey - #ccc or #bbb, something that is a shade so that the div bg-color is lighter than the page bg-color, by the same amount as the div border is darker than the page color. Does that make sense?

And maybbe the line height od the links could be a bit more.
