Opera 7 event handling

When you mouse over a block element and get the clientY/X and offsetY/X it works fine but once you put text and mouse over the text in the block is makes the offsetY/X be of a given word. Is there any way to stop Opera 7 from treating text as an individual object?

It's not just Opera 7 ..

.. what you need is a recursive function like this (written with images in mind, but works for other objects too)
