AIM protocol

what im looking for is very complex, so some good links would be great.

How does AIM work? What protocol does it use? What commands does it use and how is it set up? Im looking for any info i can find about it (my goal is to make an app that replaces AIM, not to actually distribute, but just to learn about how it works).

This website has a lot of info, and the first file that you can download looks like it is REALLY good, but i dont understand any of it, at least at first glance. Any explainations?
