flower festival layout

well i just finished the website layout(i think)
and would like some critiquing of this layout before i go further with this.

so please critique as harsh as ya want i dont mind

its for a web design competition im going to enter so i need the layout to look really good.
i know the code isnt completely valid yet so dont say anything about that i will get it validated without having to change the layout.
but it works all the way back to IE 5.0 so im not complaining.

More attractive photographs would be better.

In general, I'm saying you're using a lot more images where text would be more appropriate. Seeing as your host doesn't seem to be a fast-loading one, either, it took wayy too long to load on my PC. Just a thought.

It looks quite prettyyy overall, though

yeah, i also thought about that images thing. im probably going to keep the topnav image rollovers but the sidenav i will convert to text since i can pull of the same effect with it.
which is like 14 images less to load.

I really think a larger header is appropriate. Vertically not horizontally. Your selling flowers as well as the event. Flowers are visual. Sell them.

I also think you should make this site scalable down to 800x600 (unless your client is dead set against it), reason: this is the kind of site my mom would go to. I took her to the flower fest here the last 4 years. She uses 800x600. She's some 60+. Look at your target audience. Not the net savvy users but the little old ladies and soccer moms that actually go to these events and actually spend money while there.

It would work better if the sub navigations were centered as well. It would at least match the form of the main nav.

I'm not keen on the site background but honestly i don't know what I would do. Maybe its just not my "cup of tea", and I, myself, usually spend a good deal of time tinkering with the site background so take it for what it's worth.

Overall though, it's nice.

Since it's just one page so far (from what I found) one last note:

Every site needs a definitive footer.
