I tried many a "free" web host which turned out to be the the devils spawn in hiding.

Best bet is to find a cheap host. I remember I found one that offered a year of hosting for like 10 bucks but I can't for the life of me remember the name.

Almost all free hosts limit what you can do with your site - usually no server side scripting and they place the ads on the pages and make the profit from them instead of you.

A much cheaper option than free hosting is paid hosting where you pay a small amount each year (under $100) and you get all the income from the ads (can be thousands of dollars) and you get all the server side scripting options included.

www.freehostia.com is decent. No ads.
I use www.siteflip.com myself. Decent hosting for under 12 US dollars a year.
