why not add a Post an ASP or PHP script section in CF?

Hi everyone,

I was wondering why only the client side part of CF has something like the "post a javascript" section. Why not also having something like this in the server side part? That could be thought as a subforum (like the ones we find in the javascript section) for each scripting language, with usefull "already done" scripts that could be posted and talked about.

well... just an idea...

I gotta agree with you, it would probably work best having it as one forum and then you just state the langage in the thread title.

e.g. PHP: Poll script

I'd mod the forum if George decided to do it.

I also think that is a great idea!

I think most ppl know their resources for ready-to-use scripts but they are usually all over the web and often poorly programmed.

The issue has been brought up here before.
I think it didn't went through because server side coding often requires specific environmental parameters (databasedesign, serversettings, platform, other classes or framworks being used) and such forum could bring along lots of annoying requests for support, customizing, updating etc.
It's of course WA's decission, buth this site mainly focusses on solving punctual codingproblems (as opposed to providing script-librarys) and i'm not sure if broadening the scope would be such a good idea (there are already to many "urgent : i'm new to ... and i need some code to do this or that" posts around here, that bounce back with a "I looked at the link/code you posted but i didn't get it to work. I'd be grateful if you could modify the code so that it ...").

Hey Caffeine... Nice to hear something positive about me from you

raf, I think you're right but that would be the responsability to the person posting an "already-done" script to follow up (only if he feels like of course) his thread. And others might just not go to this part of the forum to answers questions about something not working if they don't want to... And even if one (or two or three) person can't make something work, how many people will gain benefit from these threads? It's obviously a "for/against" question since it has good and bad sides... But I still think it might be interesting.

Don't get me wrong: it would certainly be useful for some people, but so are tutorials, a joboffering section etc etc. It's like a baloon : you can keep adding content until it becomes un-managable and explodes. I look at CF as the school where you can learn to fish, and not as a takeaway where you can grab a free dish.

I believe in specialisation and in posting script at more specified sites like hotscripts.com etc. For all common or frequently used feature, there are certainly already scripts available somewhere, so there is no point in offering them in a CF forum. The only added value we could give here, is supplying examples, documentation, getting started/customize help etc. But developping and updating these things cost time ...

At the moment, i'm converting my private "code assistance bookmark-pages" into a small public "code-assistance portal" where i will also add some documented server side code i wrote, and i know some other members (brothercake, whammy,...) have there own code-section on one of there sites, where they can refer to. I think this gives the coder more flexability and is easier to keep updated, then 'storig' there code here in a new forum.

But thats just my 2 cents ...

Nightfire is on a distinguished road
I don't think it would be a good idea at all. With a serverside language there are loads of factors which raf mentioned a few of. The post a script thread would end up becoming a "help me I don't know this language" thread, which will defeat the point of the forums. The forums are for people to get help with thing's they're working on, not to get help on something they have no idea how it works.

Quite true, I hadn't really thought about it that much. What you guys have pointed out does make sense though... I guess it is one of those things that sounds good on paper but in the real world couldn't work.

speaking as one of the 3 mods in the JS Post A Script section, i'm not only not extra keen on getting a new Post A Script section, i wouldn't be sad to see the one we've got die out and fade away. most of the time, new posts in that section are people who are posting questions, not scripts. in fact, there's so much of that, that WA instituted a policy of deleting those questions, because it was getting out of hand, and cluttering the forum up.

the Post A Script forum is one of those things that's a great idea, and seems like it should be awesome, but just doesn't work out in actual practice. I wish that it did work out, 'cause i'm lazy, and i'd rather let one of the other guys around here, some of whom are much better coders than i, write scripts for me. but, sadly, i don't think it works.

/me goes back to lurking in the JS forum

Hey, guys, I have read your replies and still think this is a good idea.
I did by no means mean that complete web-applications was meant to be posted, more something like 'snippets' / methods, like whammy's for example.

Well... like Oracleguy after thinking deeper about it I changed my mind and got to agree with raf, nightfire and john6nn. Obviously like Caffeine said, some snippets would make it, but it's "only on the paper" that it's cool, it would probably be a mess like the one john6nn seems to face everyday I also realized that the baloon image that raf used to explain what would happen with such optionalities is more than right... So, let's say that it would be great but that it actually won't ... which is kind of sad.

btw it wasn't because I'm lazy that I proposed that...

This Forum (Website Reviews) is what definitively is missing in CF (IMHO). I'm learning more strategies and approaches there than in anywhere else. I'd love to hear from your experienced fingers in a Forum like that.

Hijacking are we

I've seen a lot of site reviews over at the "general web building"- forum, and on all of them, there are quite some helpful responses made. (warning : most reviewers there are quite pro standard-compliance and have ctitical but constructive comments)

Yeah, that is one of the purposes of the general web building forum, we don't get a large enough demand for that peticular service enough to warant its own forum though.
