Unhappy Site review - it seems too plain.

http://www12.brinkster.com/bdwychristian/

I am developing this site for, as you can, see, a church. This is my first actual job creating a web page for a paying customer.

Well, in anyways, it seems kind of plain. Maybe it's just me though. Comments and suggestions are more than welcome...heck, it's why I posted!

Oh, and as for not having a domain name, the church doesn't want that yet, so that's why I'm on a free host.

Thanks!

Plain? Hmmm...

Bacterozoid,

I don't think "plain" is the right word, but it is quite basic without fancy dressing-up (sort of fitting for a church site, i think); maybe you could seperate the header and navigation a bit more from the rest of the page, using some sort of divider or such. Otherwise, i can't think of anything else. Could you add a couple more pages to get a bit more feel for the navigation?

zoobie has a little shameless behaviour in the past
I didn't look...but am guessing those are images which took a long time to load. Try css for text.

I've recently been in talks with a local church for their website so:

Make sure the site is easy to navigate, think of the type of people who go to that church and if they would know about the internet. The chances are the people who read it are either people that go to the church already and want to know the latest news, or people new to the area looking for a church to go to. Many people who only use the net every now and then know links that they follow are usually blue and underlined, you don't want to confuse them.

Have a picture of the church and tell them exactly what the church does. If someone is new to the church scene they want to know if the church is Christian based, 'happy clappy' and so on.

If the church has any sister churches see if they have a site and have your layout not the same, but with a similar feel - also link to this church.

Even though the church may have an impressive array of precious things (sorry, don't know terminology for these things) do not have pictures on the site. This would be likely to catch the eye of someone who will rob the place.

It may be an idea to have a section of the site made with a blog style so that the church board can update it easily themselves with the latest news and events, even if they don't know anything about webdesign.

Ok, thanks ronald...I think an HR or something in there will help a little bit.

Zoobie, I don't believe the images take a long time to load, as there is only two or so. And I like your idea for a web URL, though I don't think the church would go for it. I do use CSS and such for text formatting...as well as most of the other layout characteristics.

Murphyz, thanks for the comments. Currently I am in negotiations with the church and I will be taking care of updates. I think eventually I will want to teach someone how to take care of updates, however, so I'll keep what you said in mind.

Thanks everyone!

Could a slightly more interesting page background help here?
But certainly a church site does not want to look over-informal or excessively casual.

Backround, yes. To the right is just a table with a background, but I'm not sure what might look good for the white area...and if I do that I need to find something to get my images transparent, lol...I need to buy animation shop or something, that was a great program...

I shall give you my very personal opinion (for what is worth)

1)I like it- it's neat- no frills

2)Maybe the Heading fonts one tiny weeny bit smaller

You and your customer should decide whether to make it more enticing or not. In that case I would either put text in some kind of frame or add a picture just to give the flavour of the COMMUNITY not necessary the church building.

It's all from me

Regards

El

INMO, it is indeed plain.
maybe you can consider putting a really splendid seamless background something to match the general feel of the site. I think if you can make something like it, then it will compliment your site very well, rather than drawing all attention towards itself. getting my point ??
chk out some at.....

so good luck with your work, but do consult your clients, see how they like it.

Mmhmm, thanks for the comments. I'll look into backgrounds and see how it works on the page and how my client/customer likes it.
