freelance web design sites?

Googling gets me a bunch of affiliate referral links and sites that are NG now. Can anyone recommend some freelance web design work sites?

The forum here tries to offer such a thing but it doesn't seem to get much traffic.

For example-Joe in Idaho wants to pay 20 beans for a quick graphic. Frank from Missouri wants to pay 50 beans for someone to install joomla for him. Anne from North Carolina wants a full fledged site and wants to see what bids are out there.

Can you recommend some links please?

Bidding

I joined a freelance editing/proofreading forum last year, paid $99 for the privilege of taking editing tests and bidding on projects. I never even got a nibble. The site did not have an open-forum type of access, though. All projects were offered through the site's owners, and there weren't very many projects to bid on.

Has anyone here had success on these bidding sites? It seems like there are a lot of people willing to undercut you for a dollar or two just to get a job. Am I jaded, or what?

getafreelancer.com and getacoder.com have beared fruit for me.

I'm thrown a bit by how many people from India (or Bangladesh etc) are there. No clue why, I guess I just didn't know webdesign was so huge in other countries. It makes sense, just never came across it I suppose. Some of those Indian people are very clever and some do nice work.

The annoying thing to me is people adding work. Make a page for me that does this. Oh I need a mouseover here too. Well there's no menu, can you add one? I need a banner too, please add that. Ya can't bail because you did the work and want the $ but grrr is it annoying and they should state that initially.

Some goofs paste replies to bid and that's just humorous to me. You can't take the time to type a reply and you think you'll win a bid? lol

I do, I love opensourcecms.com and regularly try CMS' just to play.

I don't understand why joomla has become so popular so quick. Amazing job of marketting by those guys. I don't see anything that they have that's better than postnuke or phpnuke or xoops etc but geesh people are running to their site to get their script.

Yes, but is the money worth your time? I took a look at the writing/proofreading area, and I guess if I wanted to work for 50 cents an hour, ten hours a day, I might be able to buy a cup of coffee.

Perhaps the programming areas pay $1 an hour?

You need to understand that these are global communities. Who knows what 100 US dollars=in Indian or Norway currency. The rates rrrrrrrrrreally fluctuate.

I installed the exact same CMS with the exact same theme(their request) for 100 dollars and for 500 dollars. I just bid the lowest or one of the lower ones and let the "market" of bids determine the price. Each took me maybe an hour. I've spent a week writing a javascript(errors "killed" me) for just 50.

Maybe proofreading isn't a big deal there. I see Word Press in your sig. I always see Word Press work on those two esp "plugins". If you can install Word Press you can probably install most CMS....maybe look at a different route than proofreading over there?

True enough. But there's a point at which we people living in high cost-of-living areas just can't compete with lower cost-of-living areas.

I am getting away from proofreading; I used to do it quite a bit but I'm kind of sick of it
I don't feel strong enough with other computer skills yet to actually sell my work, but I'll keep looking at the boards. There was some interesting Photoshop work listed.

Thanks for your input. I will post any other sources that I happen to find.
