I would like to develop some type of "status" monitor that will tell me if certain devices on my internal network are alive/on or not. On my network I don't have a DNS server and all devices are on DHCP.

I figure I'll need to have (probably nmap) return to me the IP address of the device and the MAC address. If I have the MAC address I can display to the user the common name.

Any good place to start?

I think you're going to face an uphill struggle doing this in a web orientated language like PHP. Sure, php doesn't have to be used for the web and can do many things from a console but what you want to do is something very rare and therefore you'll not get much help with it.

If I'm honest, you're gonna be better off doing this in a windows programming language like c#, java, VB delphi etc.

kind of right its pointless doing it purely in php.
but there are already hundreds of network and service monitoring tools out there for windows and linux all mostly opensource why re-invent the wheel.
