Need to create image gallery. Where to start?

Hello. I'm updating a client's site that was made back in 2010, and the image gallery needs a smoother interface. I was thinking of making it work similar to this one.

Image Gallery Site

I want the similar effect that when you click on an image it at least enlarges it in front of the others. (click on one of them to see what I mean.)

Anyone have links, tutorials, tips I can go to so I can at least have some idea on how to get started on updating this?

Thanks in advance.
