Please check your spelling and grammar when posting!

Hi:
A pervasive problem on CodingForums.com is some members being overly casual when posting, leaving a trail of spelling and grammar mistakes. I hereby ask that members please make a conscious effort to check for obvious spelling and grammar mistakes when posting in the future. Not only does that make it so much easier for others to decipher your question/response, spelling mistakes make it impossible for others to find your thread when searching for it, for obvious reasons.

Good point,
but I'm probably someone who makes spelling mistakes (lucky I'm not such a big poster

). Not everyone speaks english as his native language. And basicly, I'm not going to check every word in a dictionary when I'm not sure how to write it. That would just take to much time.

So I make an other suggestion, whenever someone makes spelling mistakes, tell the person. That way we'll learn something about programming and English.

I would very much appreciate* it and I'm sure many, others who don't nativly speak English, will too

If you have a program that does spell checking, the easiest way is to have that open while posting. For me, I always run my posts through MS Frontpage first to check the spelling.

Hmmm learned something already: you can say “alright”, but you don’t write it. According to Word, you have to write “All right”

Those kind of threads are really hard to answer, you don't really want to ask what the person meant [but you really should] because that user might think "ahhgrrr, why do I have to write it all over again, I already did it once!" But at the same time if you don't understand what he/she wants, then you have to ask again. [I usually don't do that, 'cause I'm afraid I might hurt that persons feelings in some way]
Some threads are just like that, words put together, with no grammar in mind at all. Don't know if the authors of them are just lazy or if they don't know english better. In any case, I feel that if you want to get some help you have put some effort in describing your scenario!

I check up every word I'm not sure of in a dictionary, I want to learn the words I don't know. I have not spoken english in about 2 years, this is kind of a way to keep my english above the surface

I don't know if this would be possible but some boards, like O'leiry's webBoard for example, have a spelling-tool included that lets you spellcheck your post before it's submitted. IMO, that is very useful !

vb3 comes with a spell check, so that shouldn't be a problem when the upgrade comes around the corner later on... although in regards to grammar; it may be hard for someone who cannot speak English correctly to put out a question in the right syntax.

Everyone makes small mistakes in his spelling eventually, and even more so if you don't write in your native tongue. But some general rules not only of spelling, but also of style, apply to almost all european languages (can't speak for the others though).

Take for example punctuation. Putting a comma or a period into your sentences helps to structure the post you write *very much*. To avoid l33t abbreviations is equally important. Compare "hi can u plz do thiz 4 me m8" to "Hi, could you please do this for me, mate. ". The latter takes longer to write but is easier to read (at least for me).

Sometimes I just have to wonder why people think it's ok to write in a very sloppy way. It only deters members to help who don't have enough time to waste for deciphering of the post. The basic idea is just so simple: Write a good post, get good response. Garbage in, garbage out.

If you spot a member that repeatedly ignores spelling and grammar mistakes, please PM me, and I'll contact the member in hopes of rectifying this. By repeatedly, I would say rather consistently.
