Well, it happened again, I upgraded Firefox on Ubuntu (9.04) and low and behold the moron developers at firefox decided to do something stupid yet again. For some reason, last time (going from 2.x to 3.x) they decided to screw around with the browser url bar (no most recently visited are on top, but instead, they change the UI to be most visited).
Now - NOW!!!, they decide to call their new browser (and the associated user agent string "Shiretoko". BIG OLD W-T-F!!! Developers (like myself) have been pushing "firefox" for years, now that it's finally getting market share, why the hell would you "rebrand" something. It's like Microsoft suddenly calling Windows 7 - "Sumatra". Users don't know what the hell that is. PLUS! All the fonts are totally screwed up. If firefox does this one more time, I'm dumping my support (both in use and in promotion). |

Is there a newer version than 3.5.4? I don't have the same problem on windows xp: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.4) Gecko/20091016 Firefox/3.5.4
Maybe a linux only thing? Edit:
Also, I haven't noticed anything with the fonts on my windows system.

Ubuntu adds their own packaging to Firefox and it is there that the font selection has changed, not the Firefox folk. Also, why are you checking for the user agent? I'm not using the new Ubuntu on this box so I can't check it myself.
EDIT: A quick lookaround shows it was Ubuntu that did this, not Firefox.

The installation has to be tinkered with in most distributions, including the BSDs, to make sure dependencies and file structures are in order. Most of the time things are pretty closed and not much needs to be done. In Ubuntu's case, though, they may be trying to make Firefox match their overall theme and that's why they messed with the fonts and such.
The same is done on Vista though not by Microsoft. |

I use firefox on Ubuntu 9.10 (and previous versions as I had them). I haven't noticed ... but that may be because I completely change firefox's config settings to make it minimal while still allowing me to use my favorite plug-ins.
I rarely type actual addresses into the url bar now. I mainly use keywords to visit all the sites I want and search with my favorite search engines (thus I never really see/care about the drop down url bar). I use ctrl+l to get into the url bar then to get to codingforums I simply type the keyword cf, or to search google I type g <insert item here>. The reason why I haven't tried any of the other browsers is because I've become so used to firefox and know the hotkeys for just about everything (and use them constantly). I never like the default settings for browsers. I just need the url bar and tabs, nothing else.
