fading image sticks once lightbox is invoked

I'm working on a fading slideshow. When you click on one of the photos, a lightbox opens up. I married the two functionalities by cobbling together two scriptaculous scripts.

On some of the photos there's a slight hiccup where it briefly shows a previous photo, or it gets stuck on one photo. This problem commences once I've used the lightbox. Any idea what's causing this?

Here is my test file: http://www.glenoaksbigsur.com/crossfade.html. There are 6 images. I've noticed the slide tends to stick especially long on the woodburning stove image (#5).

The slideshow seems to get confused once a lightbox is invoked and will either stall for a period of time or momentarily go back to the image right before then refade to the image clicked.

BTW, I validated my code down to one unavoidable error.
