htaccess and PHP

I'm kind of a begginer here,so,my question:
Can I use a .htaccess file with PHP for authentification? (I mean, can I use PHP to manipulate the .htaccess file,or the passwd file ?)

what do you "manipulate"? do you mean add users, and remove them, change passwords, and such. or have them login via PHP. the former is possible i think.

the mod should move this to the PHP forum, in my opinion.

sure it is. former and latter. never mind. here is a link to a script that claims to manage htaccess and htpasswd fileshttp://www.hotscripts.com/Detailed/12030.html. if it doesn't, ask how to do it in the PHP forum.
