Functions are synonymous to other languages which may refer to them as subroutines, or in object oriented languages they are methods. PHP supports no ability to overload its function nor methods.

That is no way near all the functions for php. The best php manual is the official one at www.php.net

The w3 schools are IMO useless. Sure, they're a very gentle break-me-in way of learning but they are not a solid way of learning php at all.
