problem with getting .wmv to play

This is an edit.

I've been using a web site where I link to video files stored on another server. Up until now, all the videos have been in .wmv format, and they've all played for anyone who clicked on the link.

Suddenly I found that a number of computers weren't able to play the link anymore: they were getting an "Unsupported Format" message. At least one of those computers WILL play the file if I plug in a hard drive it';son; it just won't play the link.

I converted one of the files to .flv format, thinking that it would be more universal. But that won't play on anything that clicks the link.

I just don't know what I'm doing wrong. Is there any way I can link to a video file in a way that it will automatically play on all computers?
