turning normal smilies into flex smilies

I use flash based chat for one of my sites and i guess they went from flash to flex on the last version.

What i am trying to do is convert my boring smilies into ones i have on another site that are mostly gif, jpg, or png.

I dont know much about flash or flex but i have heard that with flash you have to have the original .fla file in order to do anything. All i have is the .swf which does not help.

What im wondering is if flex is different, can i give someone the swf file and have them add my new smilies and then reinstall it.

I dont know how it works, or what i need to do to make this happen. Any pointers will be helpful thanks.

Nope, Flex is just a framework for building Flash so it is compiled to a SWF too. It is possible to extract assets from a SWF usually, but you can't edit it and save it again.
