what is soap ?

Hello, can you explain me what is soap for ? I only have understood it allows different web services to communicate.
when my browser sent an http request to get this page, has it used soap for something ?

Soap is a protocol to let applications exchange information via messages with one another. Soaap messages have to be coded for each use. Soap played no part of you requesting and displaying this page.
