Best way to fully charge a laptop battery

I'm going on holiday to New Zealand in a few weeks and i've bought some extra batterys for the journey and I need to charge them, but in the past i've had bad luck charging them.

Is there a 'recommended' length of time to charge them for or should i put them on charge and just leave them for a day or two?

alykins will become famous soon enough
there should be a recommendation in the spec sheet with the battery (the one that has all the warnings and what-nots)

Be careful while recharging, as overcharging will reduce your battery life.

When I purchased my laptop, I had a problem with the battery and sent it in for replacement. The tech I spoke on the phone with stated that the battery must be charged for a minimum of three hours with the laptop turned off. After that, I always give it four. Haven't had a problem, since.

Just do as usually when you will charge your laptop.
