Photo plus software can work with image or photo. You can obtain a no cost, fully-functional edition of photo plus without the need to update at a later time frame unless you want the new functions and a willing to pay for it. Performs on Ms windows 95, 98, 98 SE, 2000, NT4, and XP.

DrDOS is infamous around these parts
Even though I don't use Windows any more ( except to check webpages ) Irfanview is still one of my favorite software packages. It's still freeware and still has lots of features. All the other ones mentioned are for one at a time image manipulation, Irfanview can do some limited image manipulation but it can also do batch processing, resize 100 images at a time, make thumbnails, make slideshows, even make web pages. So what ever else you get, get it too.

Not everyone has extra money to throw at a large corporation for software that has features they may not need. And some people may need to process 100 images at a time, or do it automatically on a web server every time an image is uploaded, which is well beyond anything that photoshop will do.

GIMP can do almost evertything Photoshop can do. Some of the free add-ons for Photoshop can also be added into GIMP. AThe book "The Artist's Guide to GIMP" that I have just finished reading includes lots of tutorials on how to do many advanced graphics manipulations with GIMP thet many people mistakenly believed are only possible in Photoshop.

Also GIMP is far easier to install.

Of course GIMP isn't the best graphics "software after Photoshop" since in many ways it is by far the superior program. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say tat Photoshop is the next best graphics program after GIMP.

Nobody has mentioned Imagemagick which is command line/script so it can be automated. It and GD are behind almost any photo web app.

And is Adobe hiring shills now? I know other big companies that have in the past.

Len Whistler is on a distinguished road
I'm on Linux and I recommend:
  • GIMP
  • ImageMagick
  • Luminance HDR
  • Hugin Panorama Creator
  • UFRaw

All are free.
