Overheating laptop

Laptop: Acer Aspire 5740g
Problem: Overheating of laptop

My laptop is always on a hard /solid bench and 90% of the time i have it elevated from the table so that the fan can work at full capacity. I have also open up everything and cleaned the fan it was very dusty and dirty and now spotless.

I am out of ideas would formatting my hard drive help in this situation?

Thanks for any and all ideas

It could, but that really depends on how fragmented it is and if the system heats up when sitting idle.

Realistically, defragmenting will decrease heat generation only in situations that involve a large number of consecutive disk operations. The Acer I had just ran hot, even when I ran live Linux distros with no hardrive access.

Yeah it runs hot from the moment its turned on i dont know what to do and i dont want to burn it out and have real problems and i need my laptop for every day at work.

I might just reformat it and hope it was the system running to hard.

Over heating CPU may have some common causes:

* Fans are filled with dust (this happens over time)
* OS and software needs general tune up
* You have some kind of virus/malware using up overloading your CPU
* Thermal Paste has dried out

We can rule out the first item on that list because, you have stated that you have already cleaned your laptop.

Your second course of action would be to make sure its not software related.

If after the software issue is ruled out, then that only leaves the possibility that the thermal paste has dried out.

I hope that helps.

I think it may be the thermal paste will have to look into how to replace this and ill reformat as i dont think my system is helping the case i have alot of unused software on the go. here is a picture of SpeedFan and the specs it is putting out. This is 3 minutes after starting my machine up.

52-59C isn't that bad for a laptop. Has it actually been getting so hot it shuts off? Has it always been this hot or is it a new development?

just lately today the problem has gotten a lot worse and temps were up in the 90-100C+ that picture was just taken minutes after startup got a lot worse to the 60-70C so anyway i opened it all up and applied new thermal gel to the CPU and it is still overheating and shutting down when i try and load software.

What do i do lol?

Have you tried a laptop cooler? I have one with two additional fans for my laptop.

I hads an acer notebook awhile back. Seems they forgot to remove a plastic cover between the vent and the styrofoam spacer; this piece completely covered and blocked the vent, although I couldn't tell until I had dismantled it (it was transparent plastic). Given my history with them, I'd probably dismantle it first to make sure that they didn't leave these vents covered up before firing a brand new machine up :/

Also, did you make sure you cleaned off the old compound before adding new stuff? If you don't get a nice even / flat surface covering, then it will create gaps and not provide adequate cooling.
