I actually had to fix someone's computer recently that had a similar issue due to malware. What had happened is that all the files on the entire hard drive were marked as hidden and then the settings in explorer were set to not show hidden files.

So changing it to view hidden files and then going through and mass removing the hidden attribute from the files can resolve the issue.

Though on the computer I saw this, the problem would reoccur even after I thought I had the malware rooted out. I ended up having to format the machine and reinstall Windows. But that might have been a more extreme case, that computer was pretty badly infected with stuff.

I would recommend that you install, SpyBot S&D, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and Advanced System Care.

I have never had any infection problem of any kind that wasn't detected by at least one of them.
And all of them can complete remove whatever they do find.

You still to have an antivirus installed to.
Neither of them is a complete solution, but to my experience, those 3 i combination, will close any gap that is left by your antivirus.

Make sure you go into Safe Mode and run your anti-virus. Its the only sure way of getting rid of them.

Not quite! Though it is recommedable to run a Safe Mode Scan, it is often far from enough.

Even the best Antivirus are sometimes unable to remove certain infection.

I once had an infection that neither Norton, Panda, McAfee, Kaspersky, Etrust, HouseCall, BitDefender, AVG, nor Avira was able to remove.
(I no longer remember which infection though)

The only way I could remove it, was by using a special program developed by MalwareBytes that focused on that infection.
Though most of the AVs could detect the infection the could not remove it.

Many infections are designed to avoid detection by the major engines.

So never feel save with just one removal-program!!!!
