Ajax help!

Hey, I am REALLY NEW to AJAX so please bare with me. I tried looking at how to use AJAX but I still don't understand. My site is done using html, Css, and jquery javascripts all in dreamweaver. How can I use AJAX codes in it. For example I want content to fade in when a link is clicked instead of load. I found a tutorial step by step but it didn't work. Is there something I'm missing? THANKS
