Using graphics in an application

I was sort of crippled by learning Java in high school through ready to program, which gives a helpful console application option that can't really be used for more than a learning tool. I learned how to make applets, but I'd rather learn how to make java applications. I've looked at a few tutorial sites, but the only ones that specifically talk about how to start making applications begin with a large program already. I'd like a short guide that starts from scratch, and just tells me how to implement graphics, once I know how to do that, I can do the rest on my own.

tl;dr: Can someone link me to a tutorial that shows you how to make applications from scratch, or just show me quickly how to do it and include how to implement graphics?

When you say "graphics", I'm assuming you mean a GUI apps?

Then there are several options in Java to make GUI apps by using the available Java GUI frameworks.

Swing, JavaFX, AWT/SWT

I'd probably suggest Swing. There is a nice beginner tutorial here. Try the "Learning Swing with the NetBeans IDE" tutorial list there

Download Netbeans a Java IDE and it has some nice Swing designer tools (you'll have to download the Swing plugins, but just follow the Netbeans tutorial in the link I gave you).

Are there any good tutorials for AWT/SWT graphics? They're what I'm used to, and I'd prefer actually doing the code myself to using a drag and drop interface

You still have to code yourself when using Swing. Netbeans just has a built-in GUI editor to make it easier, but I'll often just do everything programmatically via code instead of drag and drop. Similar to what I do in Dot NET.

As for SWT tutorials, you can check out this one:
