Sliding side menu fails with doctype declaration

1) Project Details: (be as specific as possible):

I have been using this slide out side menu routine for years but never added doctype declarations before. Now I need to, but doing so causes the routine to either error on a certain line or no longer slide.

2) Payment Amount:

Whatever is reasonable.

3) Payment method/ details (Paypal, check? Timeline?):

Paypal?

4) Additional Info (about project or potential bidders):

Here is a demo:

http://www.aapress.com.au/ieltsonlin.../sidemenu.html

You can see that it doesn't slide at all. If I put it with something else requring a doctype, it errors in ssm.js:

What happens is also dependent on the browser used.

I think the menu routine needs to be brought up to date?

The external files can be downloaded from the page urls or I can zip them to you.

Thanks. Terry
