Photoshop all the way, baby. I've been with her since version 3 and I'll never be unfaithful. Version 7 is fantastic.
For the occasional vector-based work I require, there's enough vector tools present to keep me in Photoshop when I used to have to switch to Illustrator for such tasks. I hardly use Illustrator anymore. And if needs be, those Photoshop generated paths and shapes can be imported into Illustrator for finessing.
The last 3d program I used was TrueSpace 3. Not very popular but it was easy to use and was just a hobby-sort of thing.
