I saw a discussion about this on another forum where the consensus appeared to be that having the OP mark the thread as resolved when the first poorly conceived answer is supplied that kind of does what they want tends to prevent the next three or four better and better answers being posted in the first place. By not marking the thread resolved at the first answer that the OP thinks answers their question it makes the thread more useful when any better answers get added (even if the OP has gone then for anyone searching for an answer to that question).
