I hope the following makes sense.
I've recently changed the A records and CNAME of my domain to point a server where my site is soon to be hosted. This server is not going to deal with mails, just hosting. The problem is that my mails have stopped working (can't send or receive) because the MX record is set to the updated A record.
I understand that I have to -
1) create a new A record called mail that points to old mail server
2) change the MX record to mail.mysite.com
That seems fine in theory but the problem is that I'm dumb and -
1) I don't know what the original IP address was (letshost.ie has a default of 22.214.171.124, not sure if this is of help)
2) I'm a little confused by what details to put in the A/ MX records
My guess is that in the A record I would put -
Name - mail
Target - whatever the old mail server IP address is
And in the MX record
Name - ? not sure
Target - ? I can't put mail.mysite.com as mysite.com points to the new server.
No takers on this? Am I even making sense?
I've created an A record to point to the new server - 123.45.678 and also a CNAME - mysite.com
Later I did the following:
Created a new A record called mail that points to the parked DNS - 126.96.36.199.
Created a new MX record - mysite.com that points to mail.mysite.com
NSlookup confirms that the changes have resolved but I still can't connect to the mailserver.
I'm not sure if I've got the fundamentals wrong in terms of my A records, CNAMEs and MX records or if I have the incorrect IP address for the mailserver.
