View shared drive anywhere
On my home network I'm sharing a folder with various media files, photos, movies etc. Is there a way I'd be able to view these e.g. from work?
I've been told to look at VPN but it seems quite confusing so I'd like to find out if it would work before messing about. |
VPN would be one way. Another way would be to set up your home computer for remote desktop as a terminal server and authenticate your work computer, then use the work computers remote desktop to access via internet.
There are apps that do this, as well as websites where you can d/l and install a client, but I'm not sure how secure either of them are. |
If possible, I would try using Home-groups. Home-groups allow certain data to be accessed, and can be configured from both ends of the network. Basically a person can have particular access to a specific folder, usually a user folder on their own account. Furthermore, there is some trouble in that there is no formal password protection system every time the service is used; it is an all or nothing take.

I guess the simplest in via teamviewer.
1. Install the teamviewer into the server where the files are and make sure that internet is ON when you want to access it 2. then install teamviewer on your work computer 3. connect to your server using the provided teamviwer ID |
You could also look into storing your files on a cloud server like Google Drive.
