    Can I read/write txt files?

I was trying to write a script in javascript to do so but I could Now I am doing it with PHP and it`s working, but I have a problem, I need to compare 2 elemnts from a <form> I get them but the function to read it its not working. The txt file has the following format:

    JohnDoe:12345:johndoe.html

So I need to compare the first 2 elements with the <form> entry and the open the 3 element. Any ideas?
    Thanks
