Question hiding error messages etc when going online?

we made a website using an existing product and they have used mysql_query()
file() etc without disabling error display like @mysql_query etc. This would be a security issue when we launch the site to public. the site is hosted on the commercial server. Please say how to disable error display and what else needs to be done to make it run smoothly and safely?
