Configuring Apache to use my smtp.

Say my mail server is mail.xyz.net.au how can I configure apache to use that?

I've edited the ini file where it had localhost to mail.xyz.net.au but I still get an error when trying to use mail().

The error is "unable to connect to smtp server" or something similar..

    Thanks in advance

Is this smtp server on your machine or a remote machine? Does it require authentication?

It's remote, and it would require authentication.
    A username and a password.

    TIA Spookster.
