Why does this echo statement display in one environment and not in another?

    folder' : '<?php print ($home_directory.str_replace('../','',$path)); ?>',

This code is one of the settings for a jQuery plugin. Can anyone think of a reason why this parses on one server, but not on another? :(

The server in which the code is "working" has the following settings (not sure if it's helpful or not:

magic_quotes_gpc and register_globals are on (as opposed to the "non-working" server).
