This is hard to answer because we don't know how much the customers need to edit.

    How many customers?
How much they need to edit?
    What is the website about?
Is there "sensitive" information that needs to be stored?
    Can the customers register themselves?

Give us a link to your existing website and tell us what it's supposed to do.

You'll need to be able to run PHP and MySQL locally (with a server), or have
a webhost with a MySQL account (online).

You'll have to use PHP and MySQL (for the database).

    Many tutorials available online:
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&s...al&btnG=Search

We won't really be able to help with writing the scripts, because this is
supposed to be a project for school? This will be a big project and require
a lot of time to write this from scratch.

You'll need two admin sections, one for the site admin, and one for the
customer admin (edit profile) pages. All users and their info is stored in
the MySQL database. Another database for all of the CD's to buy and sell.

To do all of that from scratch? I would expect the project to take a few
weeks ... for an experienced programmer. I can't imagine doing this with
no knowledge about PHP or MySQL .... almost impossible.

A Site Admin is the user that logs onto to the site that has the ability to upload and manipulate data. So in your starts, you need some kind of permission check for that user. And if the user passes that check, than the user can have access to various web pages, site links, sections, etc. of the site to control things.

Web site administration pages are left to your imagination. All that you really need to consider is that they function well. Bonus points if it looks good, I guess.

For the customer administration, you want to make sure that it is nice and simple. Clean and efficient. The tools that customers may often use, such as a search utility, or price check, or package tracking you want to make obvious. You also want to make sure that you have links such as the privacy policy, and terms of usage are available (not sure if this is part of the project requirements, but certainally adds to authenticity of the site).

For the site admin, you want to have functions such as adding products, editing product details, adding comments and user account administration.

You also might want to take into account security. Even though this is just a class project, a large part of e-commerce is that it is secure. I'm sure you instructor is going to be looking for this

I can only see you using CSS, HTML and PHP extensivley, plus mySQL for queries and database management. A little JavaScript possibly. For three weeks, coding an entire e-commerce site is a tall order, but it isn't impossible.

Finally, just to point out, while you can't ask any of the forum members to code things for you, you still can ask for advice, or ask why isn't this code working. You could also ask for us to comment on specific segments of code, asking security or functionallity questions.
