okay so ive been reading up on php lately and im still confused with how to set up a mysql database. i mean there are scripts in the book but don't you have to go to your server and set one up? how do you set up a server to store all the information the users put in?

Are you using phpMyAdmin? Set it up if you can, makes managing mySQL databases a lot easier.

It depends on where you want to set one up at. If you pay for webspace you likely have some sort of control panel that will assist you with the initial setup, which you can then use phpMyAdmin or similar to setup/modify the tables outside of your script. If, on the other hand, you're running a server locally, with XAMPP or WAMP for example, you would probably be more familiar with a GUI-based app, like HeidiSQL. This site has a forum specifically for MySQL questions, too, and a sticky thread with some useful resources.
