It is a unix term that sets the permissions on a file or directory

    Code:
    chmod 777
this sets a file so that everyone can read, write and execute the file

CHMOD just allows you to setup permission be it to the public or the owner of the file/folder, etc.

Here is a good start: http://catcode.com/teachmod/

htaccess is to do with a web server, you can do a lot with htaccess but some of the most common uses is to user and password protect a directory or one of my favorites to add a file extension for apache to parse a certain way e.g. if i saved a php script with .png extension and in my .htaccess file add the following
    Code:
    AddType application/x-httpd-php .png
when apache goes to that directory to get say picture.png the htaccess file goes hey wait second it's not an image I am suppose to parse it as php

here is an example, my dynamic sig

i couldn't use it on forums with the extension .php so i had to fool the forums into thinking it was a static image by adding the extension .png

Hey...I recognize that ip address. I like that usik.
Most of my questions/posts are fairly straightforward and simple. I post long verbose messages in an attempt to be thorough.
