Greetings, php developers. I am one of the founders of ImageShack, popular image hosting and sharing site. The reason for this post is that we started hiring for full time engineering positions. First some useful stats about ImageShack that you may find interesting.
350 Linux Servers organized in a cluster (very similar to Google's clusters)
Linux servers are 64 bit FC6 machines, with local cache acceleration (e.g. there are storage disks and cache disks within the same machine)
Running Lighttpd webservers with fastcgi PHP (5.1.2)
Running eaccelerator to accelerate PHP.
PHP is configured with zlib compression.
MySQL 5.x is used to store all user account and image URL/tag/rating information.
MySQL consists of masters and slaves (using mysql replication).
High availability is achieved through tcp loadbalancers for both front end and backend layers of data presentation.
Front end Webservers are using mod_cml (cache markup language), together with memcached allowing for very quick cache retrieval and updates, without having to wait for mysql layer.
ImageShack images are loadbalanced with GSLB - global system load balancer. If any of the machines experience problems or slowdowns, the balancer will shift users to faster machines. GSLB controls ImageShack DNS zones, providing updates to the zones every 3 minutes.
Recently number 29 on Alexa (daily average).
30+ million unique users coming to the site every month.
2.5 Billion images served per day. Yes, we have that many downloads. Average image size is 115 Kilobytes.
Peak speed of the site is 8 Gbps.
Number of concurrent users accessing the site is > 50,000.
Number of daily image uploads > 2ml.
Registration to use the site is not required.
Number of forums, social networks, personal sites that use ImageShack > 500,000
All of numbers above continue to improve day to day.
