    Question About the server

This is in the server side catagory so I think this question is safe here...

    - what kind of server does a site like this run on?...are there more than 1?...no I'm not a hacker, the reason I ask is because I thought about buying my own server, but I still dont know quite enought about them yet.

    - What kinds of severs run web sites mostly..I know 2000 is populare, but what others are there?.

Servers cost a couple thousand dollars, might get lucky and get a used one from a large company.

They run off of linux based or windows based software.

The type of server you would need would be based off of what type of site you are hosting.

A regular box can handle a small load. I use regular boxes as production with server 2000 and 2003.

    Do research online...google always helps.

Your best bet in the beginning would just be to lease a dedicated managed server from a host. You can get a feel for what you need without paying the money for your own right away.

    Suggestion:
*Find/buy/build an old Pentium II, or AMD K-6 with a processor ~500 Mhz and about 256 Mb SDRAM.
*Download and install either Linux (Red Hat Linux , Mandrake Linux , SuSe Linux or, my favorite, FreeBSD )
*Learn how to work with either one of them
*Install all the needed software for webserver (apache + php + mysql + etc.)
And you won't need to spend my money on the server, unless you expect a very busy website.

P.S. Don't forget about speed... you will need a pretty decent upload speed.
there are no stupid questions, but there are stupid answers
