    Question .htaccess & .htpasswd

    Hello,

I am trying to password protect part of my website. I have read (& understood) various articles on creating .htaccess & .htpasswd files, however it does not seem to be working.

    File contents as follows:
    .htaccess file
    AuthUserFile C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\azl\.htpasswd
    AuthGroupFile /dev/null
    AuthName TestingAdministratorPassword
    AuthType Basic

    require user Administrator

    .htpasswd file
    Administrator:xxxxxxxxxxxxx

(I have amended the real password here for security)

The AuthGroupFile value in the .htaccess file is /dev/null however this is a Unix value and I am running Windows - could this be the problem, or is there something else I am missing?

    Kind regards,
    Andy

You're right, /dev/null is the problem. Unfortunately, I don't remember what the answer is, though for some reason, I remember just typing null.

Am i correct in saying that you are using IIS (just looking at your webroot) ?
Isnt htaccess an Apache thing ??
If So on both you have the wrong Web Server for trying to use htaccess.
Id recommend either installing apache rather than IIS or go with the IIS security (or lack of it).

    Just my 2c worth

It's unix machines only, I do believe windows machines have a file that works similar, but I don't work with windows so I've never looked it up, or cared to

Im sorry and beg to differ, .htaccess IS an apache thing and yes you can setup something similar on a win box.
As for you using apache on windows with htaccess thats no problem because as i have said its an Apache thing.
