Writing an eLearning program, any idea what should be included?

    Hi

One of our customers ( a university actually ) wants to offer its classes online and is looking for eLearning products. So, I'm surfing the Web looking for different eLearning sites and well, I'm asking you to say your idea and any part that you wanted to be included if it were your own site. To be frank with you I don't know anything about this and I just started to learn what an eLearning program should do, so, I'm asking you to help me find the necessary components. Well, writing it is a different thing, I'm now just looking for the capabalities that my future program should have.

Thanks in advance, any cool link is also welcome!

nobody has any ideas or nobody want's to have anyhing to do with learning ?

    ah well, here i go;
    - learning should be fun, so you need video (streming video, webcams on instructors, or vidoe on CD-rom/DVD)
    - should include tests. Pre-learning test to determine the startlevel and to dynamically select the chapters the student needs to look in to.
    - after each chapter you should have a test to verify if anything/enough was learned. The result of that test COULD mean that the student needs to run through that chapter again before he can move to the next chapters OR that he needs to refresh that chapter later on when another chapters builds further on it
I mean: if he didn't master chapter1, but chapter 2 doesnt builds further on that but chapter 3 does, then you can set that chapter aside for a while and do a sort of quick refreshing version of chapter 1 just before he gets into chater 3
This is better knows as a gradual learning slope. Not to much ups and down, not frustrating the students
    - students should be able to pick there methode of learning: just reading, looking at demo's on screen, look at examples/pictures/video
    - permanent (or between fixe hours) instant feedback from instructers is crucial. Students nowedays are quite spoiled (me too , just no student)
    - e-learning should be more then downloading textbooks or flip throug on line. If an e-learning platform is nothing more then a distribution channel for textbooks, then don't bother to much.

==> so it's not only a technological matter. Far from. The content is far more imporant, and in most projects i've been involved into (vocational training through open learning), that was the breaking point. It takes a lott of time to put it together and maintaining it. But maybe universitys can/will spend more effort in delivering that.
The technical problems can be solved.
I know some people (commercial ... U&I learning) that were building an e-lerning platform as described above but i can't seem to find there coordinates. If you're interested in checking them out, let me know. I'll see if i can get back in touch with them.
Meanwhile i suppose you checked out topclass and that sort a stuff?

Hi, thanks for your reply, finally I got someone who did has some info and is ready to share with me!

Well dear, some days ago that I posted this, I was going to start working on the project, but then a new small project ( another annoying javascript program, urrr ) came up and I had to spend some days on it. Well, it's not that hard but it took me 3 days and I'm gonna finish it tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. After that, I'm gonna start what I should have started some days ago! It basically means that during these days I wasn't working on it! But good news for me: I found someone in Iran who did something like what I wana write + I found you who has practical info on this!
So, I'm gonna make a complete article about the necessary parts and as I said the whole thing starts from tomorrow or the day after it for me. So, sorry for now, the answer to your question is NO! I really didn't have time. But please find those addresses that you said and in the next few days we're gonna have fun and I'm gonna write lots of things in here, I promise!

Thank you & hope to see you soon!
    bijan

PS: Your suggestion/ideas were great, I really got a preview of what I'm gonna make ( and it looks terribly hard! )

Well, good luck. And keep me informed (through PM, mail or this thread)
Hope to see me soon? You must be joking. Iran isn't exactly next door (but feel free to send me some plaintickets )
If you're going ahead with it, and want to include the testfunctionalitys, then let me know. I'm working on some stuff right now (in PHP with MySQL db) that would come inhandy. It's not intended as a free product, but i'll cut you a special deal or deliver it for free under certain conditions.
I'm still working on it, so it wount be up and running for the next weeks, but it should save you some time. (I've worked some years as a developper on screening-projects (= testing for job-skills, psychological tests, IQ-tests and stuff) and I may not be the greatest expert on testing, but after some years your bound to pick up some things.)

I'll see if i can find the email-adresses of the U&I Learning guys

    LOL

Huhu! I didn't mean face to face dear! When we're in this place and we meet in this place, then see you soon implies for here! Well, I'll send you the tickets whenever I have money ( human never collects enough money! ), but don't forget that Iran has lots of attractions for a tourist. I'm somehow a tour guide too ( just a part job, whenever I get bored of computers! ) and I see tourists having fun a lot! So, put it in your schedule!

As for as programming, well, at this level as I said I only wana make a kind of suggestion list ( I don't know what you exactly say it in English ) and give it to that university. Well, it's the only thing that they asked and I'm sure they asked other companies to provide the same list, so, I'm trying my best to get the job and of course I'll ask for your help and that guy in Iran whom I found, because it's a big big work and I'm not gonna do it alone!

Thanks for your offer, but as I said at first I have to collect enough info, then see what parts we should write ourselves and what parts should be given to other teams ( all depends on the university and what they accept ), and then I have to know what you exactly wrote and ... But thank you for the offer, you're cool

So, I'm gonna start this thing on Friday and I'll be surely in touch with you, thanks for your help in advance and bubye.

    OK. Just let me know.

Here' an example of an e-learning tool that used U&I Learnings platform.
    http://vdab.be/webleren/demo.shtml
sadly for you, it's in dutch buth just click around a bit. The learning slope thingy isn't implemented on it, and they didn't want to spend time on building the demo's, buth you'll get the picture.
they did include test (but not linked to a learning plan, which would have been the big gain for using test).

i contacted someone that was working on the test-learning program so i'll let you know if anything turns up.

at the time, i thought it was an excellent idea but i knew that the firm i was working then (the same as the url's), wouldn't spend the time to create all that content. As a programmer, when you make a proposal, just emphasize the big gain of such functionalitys (they need to supplie the content, so most of the work for these features lies on there side )

When i'm developping a proposal, i alway include an implementation plan. Always empasize the quick wins, promote your tool as something modular --> "you can start with the basic version that just distributes the content and add on immages/video later. and after some time include the test (say, at the end of the first academic year) and then use these testresult to build a pre-learning test to select the chapters they need to learn, for the next academic year) and to optimize the tool, we can build in ..."
You know, break it down into smaller, easier to understand pieces. Give the client the message it'll be running quite fast (the elementary version) and can then be further developped

THANK YOU!! Hey man, who're you?! The devil himself?! I was almost ready to give you the job and just all of a sudden I remembered I'm not a university!

It's really cool! I never thought of it! You know, I actually saw the proposal plan of another company ( they are bigger with more programmers ) and I saw they defined a timeline for the whole job, like making this component takes 3 weeks and that component 10 weeks and so on! You know, I'm much of a reader myself, i.e. I like to understand the real importance of what I'm reading and I really enjoy if the writer spoke about the gains that I would have. You're right, I'm gonna focus on it and even though I write it in Farsi ( my language ), but I'll bring its parts in here too asking for your idea. It should be descriptive AND You're cooooooooooooooooool!

Hmm, the devil ? Sounds good. I'm hot as hell

It's just some little things i picked up along the way. Getting a project and convincing the management is some sort a game and you just need to know the rules.

Management likes to know whats coming at them. When will they have something that works (even if its elemntary)? Which budget must they reserve for this year, which for the next year. That sort a stuff. It's not always the quality of the proposed project that delivers the deal (sadly, sometimes)

It's maybe best if you PM me and include your mail-adress
