    Design question

I'm working on a site for a client. The goal of the site is to generate a set of files. When there is a large number, the file generation can take 30-60 seconds. The code to generate the is synchronous, and the page doesn't render until the generation is complete. I would like a solution where the page is rendered, and as files are generated, they appear on the page.

The backend is written in PHP. I've begun to learn about ajax/DHTML, but I'm not sure where to start. I understand the logic behind how to do this (timer to periodically check for generated files, etc), but I don't understand what type of mechanism I'd want to use to display the results.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
