How to fake a semaphore Lock() in client script?

Does anyone have a method of implementing a single, simple, semaphore lock in client side javascript? In particular, the "Lock()" object does not seem to be implemented in the browsers I've checked, and one clearly cannot use a file locking mechanism. Is there anything which can be used? I.e. is there any object anyone can think of which allows only exclusive single-instance access?

Are you talking to limit the application to only one user at a time, then you are going to need server side code for this.
