Cannot be done reliably.
You can put code in the onunload of the page to TRY, but it doesn't always fire.
You can try to remove the back button, but I have keyboard shortcuts to go back and my right-click menu.
You can try to take that away, but I have a quick bookmarklet to get it back b/c it really irritates me when people do that.
So, you can try to save the user from himself/herself, but your best bet is to inform them in plain text at the top of the page...
IF YOU LEAVE THIS PAGE WITHOUT SAVING (INCLUDING HITTING BACK BUTTON) YOUR DATA WILL BE LOST.
If this post contains any code, I may or may not have tested it. It's probably just example code, so no getting knickers in a bunch over a typo, OK? If it doesn't have basic error checking in it, such as object detection or checking if objects are null before using them, put that in there. I'm giving examples, not typing up your whole app for you. You run code at your own risk.
