    Is there some way to derive a hex or rgb value from css props that contain system color constants?

    Nah, I was looking for something like this:
    turned out that I had to cheat with MMC
    Code:
    <!-- saved from url=(0013)about:internet -->
    <body style="text-align:center" onload="makeSysColorTable()">
    <script type="text/javascript">
    function makeSysColorTable()
    {

    	var scc = new ActiveXObject("SysColorCtrl.SysColorCtrl");
    	var cons =
    	[
    		"activeborder"       ,
    		"activecaption"      ,

    Why would you need to or want to run ActiveX when the styles I posted along with getComputedStyle would return the values....

    FWIW: I am currently developing a site which uses the systems default colors... But needing to use ActiveX would negate the entire effort...

    Well, that's what I'm asking

    Do you know of an example for "getComputedStyle"? I looked that up in the SDK, and only found it listed as a method of IDisplayServices -- which is not accessible from script...

    I mentioned in my first response that your question was not very clear... You should have restated your question to make it easier for us to understand what exactly it is you are trying to do...

    Ok, at any rate, currentStyle returns the system color constant, not a color value, so...

    What do you mean by color constant? RGBA values such as: 255 255 255...

    If so, a little math will convert those values to hexidecimal....
    I do not have the formular handy ATM but it should not be too hard to find...

    The color constant is the system color name; e.g., threedhighlight...

    Did you run my example? That pretty much sums it all up. Too bad that sort of thing is unsupported by browsers. (or is it? )

    No I did not run your example because I have ActiveX completely disabled and do not wish to change my security settings just to run the example...

    Edit: but I now see what you mean without ActiveX...

    Code:
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/strict.dtd">
    <html>
    <head><title>CSS2 System Colors</title></head>
    <body>
    <table width="100%" border="1">
    <tr>
       <td style="background-color: ActiveBorder; color: black; width: 25%; cursor: pointer"
           onclick="alert(this.currentStyle.backgroundColor)"> bg: ActiveBorder <br /> Active window border. </td>
    </tr>
    </table>
    </body></html>

    Indeed, that could be maliciously helpful... we wouldn't want IE to have the upper hand, now, would we... well, it's a good HTA utility, at least.

    Browser developers really need to get their act together and give us script kids a detailed interface.

    You know, it's comical... check out MSDN's table of your system colors: each name may or may not be visible, because the appropriate forground color cannot be determined by the browser... you'd think the fact that they can't make full use of them would be enough to enrich those properties, but NOOOOOOOOO!!!

    The table might only show up in IE, btw:

    Oh, and Willy: the same problem plagues your example, in case you hadn't noticed...
